Adolescent & Teen ABA

For older kids and teens with autism. We focus on the skills that matter as middle school approaches: independence, executive function, social navigation, self-advocacy, and managing the parts of being a teen that autism makes harder.

What it is

ABA grown up with your child

ABA for adolescents isn't the same as ABA for toddlers. The goals shift. We're no longer teaching first words or potty training. We're working on independence skills, managing schedules, handling middle-school social complexity, navigating disappointment and frustration, and the gradual handoff of self-management from parent to child.

Sessions look different too. They might happen in a coffee shop instead of a living room, focused on practicing ordering or handling small-talk. They might happen in the bedroom while we work through how to plan a school project. They might happen on a community walk where we practice using public transit.

Many adolescents are coming off years of ABA from when they were younger. Some are starting fresh as teens. We adjust the approach to where your child actually is, and we involve them in setting their own goals.

Inside the program

What to expect

Sessions are typically two to four hours, often after school. Your BCBA designs goals collaboratively with you and your teen. Self-determination matters more at this age. A goal your teen agrees with is a goal that actually moves.

We coordinate with school teams, mental health providers (some teens see therapists or psychiatrists alongside ABA), and any other supports your child has. The goal is one cohesive plan, not three competing ones.

FAQs

Questions families ask us

ABA has no age cap. It's a science-based approach to teaching skills and changing behaviors. The goals scale with the person. Adolescent ABA looks nothing like toddler ABA, and that's the point.

Adolescent buy-in is real. We don't force participation. Our first job is to find goals your teen actually cares about. Once that's there, the work happens. We've had skeptical teens become enthusiastic about goals like driving independently, getting their first job, or handling a relationship.

ABA targets behavioral and skill-building goals. If your teen is dealing with clinical anxiety or depression, that's a job for a mental health therapist. We work alongside them. If you're not sure where to start, we can help you figure out what kind of support fits.
