Verbal Behavior Therapy

Functional communication for children who don't yet have a way to be understood. We use verbal behavior strategies inside the broader ABA program to build language, requesting, and conversation, whether your child uses words, signs, or an AAC device.

What it is

A specific approach to teaching communication

Verbal Behavior (VB) is a specific framework inside ABA, based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of language. Instead of teaching words by category (nouns, verbs, etc.) it teaches by function: requesting, labeling, repeating, responding. The goal is communication that works in the real world.

For some children, this looks like building first words. For others, it's expanding from single words to phrases. For kids who use AAC devices (picture systems, speech-generating apps), we use the same functional framework with whatever communication system fits.

Verbal behavior is woven into a comprehensive ABA program. Your BCBA decides how much to emphasize it based on your child's communication profile.

Inside the program

What to expect

Sessions look like play and structured teaching mixed together. Your therapist uses motivation (favorite snacks, toys, activities) as the engine for communication. Your child learns that asking gets them what they want, faster than not asking.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and ABA teams often work in parallel. If your child has an SLP through school or privately, we coordinate so goals don't conflict.

Questions families ask us

We can't promise specific outcomes, and we wouldn't. What we can promise: we'll work systematically on functional communication using the system that's the best fit for your child, including AAC if that's appropriate.

Many of our families have both ABA and SLP. We coordinate with your SLP so we're working on aligned goals, not pulling your child in different directions.

Verbal behavior is a specific framework within ABA. Most modern ABA programs include verbal behavior strategies, but we adjust the emphasis based on what your child needs.
